Porcelain Veneers – What Are They?

Veneers are dental prosthetics that are bonded to the surface of damaged, malformed, or discolored teeth. Crafted from porcelain, these wafer thin shells look like natural teeth and can blend in seamlessly with a person’s smile. Because they are secured to the exterior façade of a tooth, veneers can be used to treat a number of cosmetic flaws, and the placement process is minimally invasive. Other prosthetic options, such as dental crowns, are placed entirely over a damaged or decayed tooth, and though aesthetically pleasing, are intended more for restorative purposes than for cosmetic reasons. With veneers, you can correct problems ranging from minor chips and cracks to gaps and malocclusion in little time at reduced cost.

The Treatment Process

Placing porcelain veneers requires just one visit to our Century City office. With our CEREC® system, we are able to craft laboratory restorations on-site in less than an hour. During your visit, Dr. Hong will discuss your goals with you in detail. This will allow her to customize a treatment plan around your needs and provide her with a better understanding of your expectations. Once Dr. Hong is confident that she can successfully meet your goals, she will prepare the affected teeth by removing a small outer layer of enamel. This step is integral in the placement of porcelain veneers, as space needs to be created so that the prosthetics can sit flush with the rest of the teeth, and an etched surface provides for a better bond than a smooth one. After this step is complete, Dr. Hong will create a computerized map of your teeth so that your veneers can be fabricated specifically to your measurements. This scan will then be input into our CEREC® machine – a 3D mill that can create complete restorations in just 15 minutes.

When your permanent veneers are complete, Dr. Hong will secure your restorations with dental cement. After the veneers have been bonded, Dr. Hong will make slight adjustments as necessary to ensure that the veneers fit nicely with the surrounding teeth and match the color and sheen of your smile.
